This course surveys of modern Middle Eastern history from Napoleon's invasion of Egypt in 1798 until the present time. Topics include the Ottoman Empire, World War One and the making of the modern Middle East, the Arab/Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Islamist movements, the Iranian Revolution, the U.S. in the Middle East, and the Arab uprisings in the early twenty-first century. The course emphasizes giving students the necessary historical background to understand current events in the Middle East.
