Students who have experienced life in a foster home or group home often need extra support and resources to ensure they succeed in college. Due to life experiences, such as being removed from one's home, exploitation, and unstable environments, former foster youth are the least likely population to attend and even less likely to complete a college education.

But their chances greatly improve if they make their way to MiraCosta College’s Resources and Assistance for Former Foster Youth (RAFFY) program. RAFFY serves 60-to-70 students each year. It is a powerful counseling and networking program designed to assist students who have aged out of the foster care system. The program features specialized academic advising, personal counseling, social services referrals, financial assistance, and mentoring. Every 6 months the RAFFY program produces graduates who have earned a certificate of achievement or associate degree or satisfied the requirements to transfer to a university. RAFFY students have transferred to CSUSM, SDSU, UCSD, USC, UCLA, and National University, to name just a few destinations.
