Reading
Reading courses are designed to build and enhance college-level skills in reading and critical thinking. Students take READ 100 to satisfy MiraCosta College’s reading competency requirement and to apply toward the Liberal Arts with an Area of Emphasis in Arts and Humanities or Liberal Arts with an Area of Emphasis in Social and Behavioral Sciences associate degrees. (See Liberal Arts for specific degree requirements.) READ 105 may also be used to satisfy the MiraCosta reading competency requirement and may apply toward the Liberal Arts with an Area of Emphasis in Business and Technology associate degree.

READ 30: College Reading Development

This is a diagnostic-prescriptive program designed to support student progress in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, reference skills, and word analysis. A wide variety of college preparatory materials and activities are used to meet student needs. (Formerly READ 830.)
READ 100: Critical Reading and Thinking

Advisory: ENGL 50 or READ 30.

This course is designed to improve students' skills and techniques in critical reading, critical thinking, analysis, and logical reasoning in academic texts. Topics include advanced critical reading, logical reasoning and thinking, argument validation, analysis of extended argument, examination of valid and invalid inferences, and problem solving skills.
READ 105: Academic Reading for Success

This course is designed to improve students' abilities to read and understand college-level texts across the curriculum. It introduces various reading and learning strategies to improve textbook reading in various disciplines. Topics include discipline-specific reading strategies, critical reading and thinking, reading as a process, summary writing, note taking, research skills, and study skills.
READ 292: Internship Studies
Units: 0.5-3
Prerequisites: None
Corequisite: Complete 75 hrs paid or 60 hrs non-paid work per unit.
Enrollment Limitation: Instructor, dept chair, and Career Center approval. May not enroll in any combination of cooperative work experience and/or internship studies concurrently.
Acceptable for Credit: CSU
This course provides students the opportunity to apply the theories and techniques of their discipline in an internship position in a professional setting under the instruction of a faculty-mentor and site supervisor. It introduces students to aspects of the roles and responsibilities of professionals employed in the field of study. Topics include goal-setting, employability skills development, and examination of the world of work as it relates to the student's career plans. Students must develop new learning objectives and/or intern at a new site upon each repetition. Students may not earn more than 16 units in any combination of cooperative work experience (general or occupational) and/or internship studies during community college attendance.
READ 298: Directed Study in Reading
Units: 1-3
Prerequisites: None
Enrollment Limitation: Instructor and department chair approval and successful completion of 12 units of college work with at least a 3.0 grade-point average.
Repeatability Rule: May be taken for a total of 3 units.

This course allows students to pursue a special area of interest in order to achieve specific goals beyond the scope of existing courses within the discipline.
